A guide from SparkTribe

Software placement preparation

Placement preparation is getting ready for the rounds software companies use to hire freshers. Most campus and off-campus drives test the same few things: aptitude, coding, CS fundamentals, and how you communicate in interviews. This page explains what each round checks, an order to prepare in, and where SparkTribe helps.

What the selection process usually looks like

The exact rounds vary by company: service companies often weigh aptitude more, product companies coding. The building blocks are the same.

  1. Round 1

    Online assessment

Aptitude (quantitative, logical reasoning, verbal) and usually one to three coding problems, under a time limit.

Often the biggest filter, so speed and accuracy matter as much as knowing the method.

  2. Round 2

    Technical interview

Solving a DSA problem while explaining your approach, questions on OOP, DBMS, operating systems, computer networks and SQL, and questions about your projects.

Interviewers listen to how you think: say your approach before you code, and test it on an example.

  3. Round 3

    HR or behavioural interview

How you communicate, why you want the role, and how you handled real situations (a deadline, a conflict, a mistake).

Prepare a few true stories in advance; the STAR method (situation, task, action, result) keeps answers short.

An order to prepare in

  1. Get comfortable in one programming language

Variables, loops, functions and the standard collections, until writing them takes no thought.

  2. Learn DSA in order and solve problems every day

Arrays and strings, then recursion, linked lists, stacks and queues, searching and sorting, trees and graphs. Solving matters more than watching.

  3. Practise aptitude alongside, a little daily

Aptitude rewards speed, which only comes from regular timed practice, not a last-week cram.

  4. Revise CS fundamentals

OOP, DBMS and SQL, operating systems and computer networks: the theory questions of the technical round.

  5. Practise interviews out loud

Answer questions under time, explain solutions as you would to an interviewer, and note what you could not answer.

  6. Prepare your resume and HR answers before drives start

A one-page resume you can talk through line by line, and your stories for the HR round.

DSA and coding

The coding round decides most placements, and DSA is what it tests. SparkTribe's 50-day course teaches it in Tamil, from programming basics up, one lesson and a set of problems a day. With Pro and Premium, the DSA sheets give a problem roadmap for each salary target, from fundamentals to 40 LPA product companies.

Interview questions by subject

Prepare is SparkTribe's interview question bank, grouped by subject and topic, to read, practise and revise. It is free with a SparkTribe account. Today it holds 165 questions across 3 subjects.

Practise like the real rounds

  • Mock interviews (free): questions from the subjects you choose, under time; mark what you knew and what to revise.
  • Timed MCQ tests (free): topic tests that are graded as you finish, with your results kept for comparison.
  • Revision (free): questions you marked come back on a spaced schedule until you know them.
  • Coding round and DSA sheets (Pro and Premium): a timed set of problems from your sheet, and the sheets themselves.

Aptitude

Aptitude covers quantitative ability, logical reasoning and verbal ability, and it is usually the first filter in an online assessment. The Pro and Premium plans include SparkTribe's aptitude and reasoning course, taught in Tamil.

The FAANG prep plan

For product-company interviews, the Pro and Premium plans include a week-by-week preparation plan in six phases:
